Exploring Early Life – Online Talk by LSR Member Charles Lee
Supervised by LSR Deputy Director Dr. Joseph Michalski, MPhil candidate Mr. Charles Lee has focused on his final year project studying the graphite in the Wallace Lake area, Canada. With some interesting findings, Charles is nominated by the Department of Earth Sciences, HKU to present his work in Young Fellow Evening Talks, which are organized by The Geological Society of London – Hong Kong Regional Group.
Life in Archean has long been a puzzle. Many life-recording rocks at that time had been subject to high temperature and pressure, which wiped off the morphology and chemistry an original cell once possessed. Yet, some 2.9-Ga-old graphite dug out from the Wallace Lake area for the first time may possibly represent early life. How does the graphite behave? In what ways can we prove that it comes from life?
Entitled “In Search of 2.9-Ga-old Life: Exploring the Beauty of Dark Carbon in Wallace Lake, Canada”, the online talk via zoom encompasses a brief overview of graphite in early Earth minerals and rocks, followed by some techniques applied to determine their biogenicity.
